STEP Operation Traffic Safety and Enforcement Results from Wednesday, October 15th, 2014
Burlingame, CA – On October 15th, twenty-two traffic officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County participated in the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). This was the tenth deployment in 2014 of a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County. The October 15th effort focused on traffic enforcement in the cities of East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
The October 15th deployment included education and enforcement on unsafe driving. Officers made in excess of 240 traffic stops in the two cities and issued 207 citations. Of the 207 citations issued, 58 were for cell phone violations, 43 were for seatbelt violations, 43 were for speeding, 25 were for failure to stop at a stop sign, and 13 were for failure to obey signs. Additionally, there were eight drivers found to be driving unlicensed, three drivers were found to be driving on a suspended license, two persons arrested for outstanding warrants, and two persons cited for possession of narcotics. The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism. The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula.
This is the tenth deployment in a number of planned multi-agency saturation deployments scheduled to be performed throughout San Mateo County in the coming year. The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association and Redwood City Office of the California Highway Patrol have all committed to this important safety initiative.
