Local 9-Year-Old Girl Runs Bakery From Home

When you think of a bakery, you probably picture a little old lady greeting you at the counter, or a friendly, round gentleman who slightly resembles Santa Clause running around behind the register. So would it surprise you to know that, nestled inside the Woodland Hills community is a little 9-year-old girl, running a bakery out of her family home? Yes, RUNNING it. While mom admits to financing her daughter’s gift, Lucy Babcock has been prepping, mixing, baking, and selling cupcakes and other tasty treats for Lucy’s Bake Shop since she was 6 years old.

Lucy attributes her sweet tooth, and thus her love of baking, to her older brother, whom she says has been baking with their mother since Lucy was in the womb. Baking has always been a part of her life, so it seemed a natural progression to start her own business, even at such a young age. Lucy is a typical kid, going to school full time and participating in both softball and soccer. She also has her own band, “The Swaggers” in which she sings and writes the songs, as well as playing the cello, piano, guitar and flute. But her passion is baking, providing desserts to community events, even weddings in need of up to 400 cupcakes. Most of her customers are local residents, friends and family who place their orders online at the company website, lucysbakeshop.com.

The youngest member of the Topanga Chamber of Commerce, Lucy has been recognized for her contributions to the community, as well as her charitable giving. Lucy donates a percentage of each sale to one of twelve different charities, her favorites being Nature Wildworks and the Topanga Animal Rescue. So far, more than $1200 has been donated to charities in the area. Of more than 200 local businesses, Lucy’s Bake Shop was awarded Business of the Year last year by the Topanga Chamber of Commerce.

Lucy’s next project: a Topanga fundraising event in Spring of 2015 that will feature desserts from her shop, as well as live bands (including The Swaggers) that will be performing amongst the festivities. Admission will cost patrons either a cash or gift donation, and all proceeds will go to local charities that Lucy herself will choose. Information on this event will be posted on their website as the date gets closer.

When asked what her most popular cupcake flavor was, Lucy smiled and said “They’re all kinda popular.” Among her favorites: Chocolate S’mores, Mint Patty, Grape, and Lemon Blueberry, and she will also be featuring special Halloween flavors for the upcoming holiday.

Now taking orders for you next holiday gathering, birthday party or baby shower! To place an order and to view a list of cupcake flavors and other tasty treats available, visit LucysBakeShop.com.
