STEP Operations Planned Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 15th in Menlo Park and East Palo Alto

Burlingame, CA – On October 15th, twenty-seven traffic officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County will be participating in the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). The STEP initiative is a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County. Tomorrow’s deployment will occur in the cities of East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

Officers will be conducting school bus safety education and enforcement in addition to other safety violations within East Palo Alto. “It’s imperative that vehicles approaching school buses that are stopped while loading children that have their red lights flashing and a “STOP” sign displayed, stop and wait for the bus to finish loading all boarding students” said Chief Mark Raffaelli of the East Palo Alto Police Department. “The safety of the children in our community is of utmost importance to the East Palo Alto Police Department.”

Menlo Park Chief of Police Bob Jonsen Added, “We want everyone to be safe while traveling on our roadways, whether in a vehicle or traveling as a pedestrian; so we are teaming with other state and local law enforcement officials to crack down and strongly educate and enforce our most basic and important highway safety laws.”

This is the tenth deployment in a number of planned multi-agency saturation deployments scheduled to be performed throughout San Mateo County in the coming year. The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association and Redwood City Office of the California Highway Patrol have all committed to this important safety initiative.
