Sausalito Community Awareness - The Great Shakeout and Tiburon Peninsula Siren Test - October 16th 2014 at 10:16am

The Great Shakeout and Tiburon Peninsula Siren Test
October 16th 2014 at 10:16am

On October 16th at 10:16am the Tiburon Peninsula will conduct a semi annual test of the emergency siren system. The test will signal the beginning of Tiburon's participation in the 7th annual "Great Shakeout" nationwide earthquake drill.

The sirens are located at 277 Karen Way (Bel Aire School), Fire Station 10 at 4301 Paradise Dr., 105 Avenida Miraflores (Del Mar Middle School) 199 Kleinert Way (The Tiburon Corporation Yard), Fire Station 11 at 1679 Tiburon Blvd and 3700 Paradise Drive. When the sirens sound residents should tune into the Belvedere/Tiburon emergency radio station at 840 AM for information.

The timing of the test was set to coincide with "The Great Shakeout" earthquake drill. Everyone is encouraged to duck, cover and hold, wherever they may be, at this time. The Reed Union School District will participate as will employees of the Town of Tiburon and City of Belvedere. To register yourself, your family or your workplace as participants, please go to www.shakeout.org. Valuable resources can be found on this website including fliers and sound bytes that can be played during the drill.

A telephone notification alerting residents to the siren test will be sent on October 15 at noon to all residential telephones on the peninsula. Those people who have signed up for "Alert Marin" will receive the same message via telephone, text and email. The notification will achieve two purposes. It will warn residents of the siren test and exercise a valuable mass communication tool.

If you have not yet signed your household up to receive emergency notifications through the Alert Marin program, go to wwww.alertmarin.org to register your home phone, cell phone numbers and email addresses. In the event of a disaster you'll be notified on all of them. If you don't then the only message you will receive will be on your home phone. If you need assistance or have questions, please call me at (415) 435-7386.

Please take this opportunity to practice your response during an earthquake and review your preparedness. Ask yourself: If this were a real earthquake, would I be prepared to shelter in place for 5-7 days? Do I have the necessary supplies and a good plan in place for my family and myself? How will I communicate if local phones aren't working? What if I'm away from home when an earthquake strikes and roads and bridges are impassable?

If you can't answer these questions, free Get Ready classes are available to help you prepare. Go to www.getready94920.org for a current class schedule and to sign up for a class.
