Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies Celebrate “Quinceañera” with Daughter of Murder Victim, #LASD Carson Sheriff’s Station

On November 4, 2006, 32 year-old Esther Arteaga and 74 year-old Eduardo Roco were shot and killed during an attempted robbery of a gas station in the city of Carson.  Esther, a single mother, had recently taken the job at the gas station in order to care for her seven year-old daughter Katty Gomez, who in addition to other family members of both victims, was left behind to mourn her loss.

Carson Sheriff’s Station deputies Jorge Padilla, Nancy Bowley, and Blanca Arevalo, all of whom responded to and aided in the investigation of this senseless crime, were so moved by little Katty and the loss she suffered, they vowed to become a part of her life.

For years following the untimely death of her mother, Deputies Padilla, Bowley, and Arevalo stayed in touch with Katty, until such time that she and her family moved to the State of Louisiana in an attempt to start a new life.

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Katty celebrated her 15th birthday with a “Quinceañera” celebration in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she now lives with her grandmother and other family members.  As a surprise for Katty, deputies Padilla, Bowley and Arevalo (who has since been promoted to sergeant) flew to Louisiana to join her in celebrating the momentous occasion.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department remains unwavering in its support for victims and survivors of violent crimes.  Although nothing can be done to completely erase the emotional pain and suffering the family and friends of Esther and Eduardo have experienced, it is the wish of all members of the Sheriff’s Department that this small gesture will remind Katty she has not been forgotten.

For any media inquiries, please contact Lieutenant Adams, Carson Sheriff’s Station, at (310) 830-1123.

Deputies Padilla, Bowley, and Arevalo will be available for interviews Tuesday, October 14, 2014.
