On October 12, 2014 at about 3:03 am, the Escondido Police Department received a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a silver Toyota Corolla on Bear Valley Pkwy at Canyon Rd. Responding officers and Escondido Fire personnel arrived to find the car engulfed in flames. Once the fire was put out, the lone front-seat passenger required extrication by FD for removal. The driver was found to be deceased.
The passenger, identified as Angel Ramirez, a 23-year-old Escondido resident, was transported to Palomar Medical Center with severe traumatic injuries. The driver has not yet been identified. According to witnesses and physical evidence, it appears the vehicle was east-bound on Bear Valley Pkwy at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle approached Canyon Rd, the driver was unable to negotiate a slight curve in the road. The vehicle then struck a signal light post where it came to rest. Speed is believed to be a factor in this collision. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved.
This investigation is ongoing at this time and is being conducted by Officer Bruce “Tony” Masten of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Officer Masten at the above phone number.
