Amateur Radio Exercise to test Readiness Saturday 8am to 12 noon.
On Saturday, Oct 11, from 8am to 12 noon, the Madison County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) will be conducting a Simulated Emergency Test (SET.) This will be a state-wide exercise. The scenario involves a category 5 hurricane that comes ashore in the Alabama Gulf. It then tracks north across Alabama, bringing heavy rains, flooding, and spin-up tornadoes. Power outages, along with sporadic internet availability will test ARES's abilities to provide critical communications to several served agencies.
ARES will deploy to shelters for evacuees, perform stream-monitoring for flood reports, and do general storm-spotting/reporting. These amateurs will be providing their own power, communication equipment, and antenna setups. ARES will try to go out into as many outlying communities in Madison County as possible. This will ensure that during a real event, critical emergency communications can be performed.
The SET is performed annually, with scores being awarded for different goals met. Madison County has rated in the top 3 the past 2 years, and has helped Alabama to become the national leader in SET scoring.
