Crash on I-65 Sends Four to Hospital

Clinton County-Yesterday evening at approximately 11:56 p.m. on I-65 southbound near the 156 mile marker (that is two miles south of the SR 28 exit) in Clinton County, a semi fails to slow for the construction and slams into the rear of other vehicles causing a chain reaction.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kent Wainscott has revealed that a white 2010 Freightliner pulling a trailer driven by Reginald E. Banks, 41 from Chicago, was southbound nearing the construction zone. A red 1995 Dodge pickup truck driven by Trent M. Richardson, 23 from Lebanon, IN was stationary near the 156 mm due to traffic backup at the construction area. Richardson saw the Freightliner coming and appeared to not be slowing.
He started to pull into the median and was clipped in the rear and spun into the median.

A white 2015 Peterbuilt pulling a trailer was driven by Lewis J. Eggert JR, 65 of North Liberty, IN was also stopped and the Freightliner ran into the rear of his trailer which pushed his rig into a white 2014 Freightliner pulling a 2002 Stoughton Trailer driven by Andrew T. Nungester, 50 of Bargersville, IN.

Debris from the crash was strewn onto the interstate for about 400 yards. All four drivers were taken to Witham Hospital in Lebanon, IN for what appears to be non-life threatening injuries. The Dodge pickup and the 2010 Freightliner appear to be a total loss. The other two tractor trailer rigs received heavy damage. The interstate was closed for about three hours for re-construction of the crash, removal of the injured and cleanup. No citations have been issued at this time for the crash is still under investigation.

Assisting at the scene was the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Perry Township Fire Department, Clinton County EMS, Boone County EMS, INDOT and Zore’s Wrecker Service out of Lebanon, IN.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
