The Goleta Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Friday night, October 10, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.   DUI checkpoint locations are conducted in specific locations where there is a higher frequency of impaired driving arrests.

Our goal is to further educate the public about the impacts of driving while impaired.  We want you and your family to be safe to travel on the roads without fear of being injured or killed by an impaired driver.  Senior Deputy Jeff Farmer said, “No one wants to hear that their friends or family members were killed by an impaired driver.  Driving under the influence is a choice that could easily be avoided by making a responsible decision to find another way to your destination rather than driving after you have consumed alcohol or drugs.” 

You could be arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) if your blood alcohol content is .08% or greater, or if you are under the influence of any drugs or alcohol or a combination of the two, which would impair your physical or mental ability to drive a vehicle.  Drugs that might impair a driver could be anything from illicit drugs to prescribed medications.  If the drug causes impairment, you could be arrested for DUI even if you have been prescribed the medication.

Driving requires numerous mental and physical tasks.  If you are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, your decision-making abilities become altered, which could cause you to fail to properly react to various hazards.

Those arrested for DUI can expect a possibility of jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses which can exceed $10,000.  Your jail time and fines are significantly enhanced should you have caused a collision while under the influence of alcohol/drugs and injured or killed someone.

Just remember “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”  If you see someone you believe is driving while impaired, don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1!
