Residents continue to receive calls from people posing as the IRS. IT'S A SCAM.
The current scam seems to illicit payment for back taxes from a caller posing as the IRS. If payment is not received the threat of a warrant is made. The caller asks for payment through the use of Green Dot cards which are mostly untraceable because the numbers used are from spoof phone numbers.
The IRS advises if residents want to find out if they owe taxes they can call the IRS at 1-800- 829-1040. If residents believe they have received bogus calls claiming they owe taxes, they can report scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484.
If you receive a call from someone posing as the IRS:
1) Never agree to pay any fees using pre-loaded debit cards, or wire transfers for any reason
2) The IRS will not call you - ever - and demand immediate payment for back taxes
3) Never provide bank account or other personal information (SSN#) to a caller.
4) Scammers will spoof their phone numbers to use Washington, D.C. Area codes; will claim to be an IRS Agent and may even give you a badge number; often get another person involved in the scam who may claim to be a supervisor or law enforcement agent.
