SANTA ANA, CA –The Santa Ana Public Library continues its series of programs under the California Reads grant War Comes Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front. These programs are part of a statewide effort to provide local communities with a new perspective on the variety of issues confronting returning veterans and help create understanding and open communication among community members and active/retired service men and women.

Friday, October 10, 6 pm to 8 pm, AMONG HEROES
Meet muralist Carlos Aguilar as he shares the stories of the veterans depicted on his mural “Among Heroes”. Special guest, Richard Rodriguez, a WWII veteran whose image appears in the mural, is expected to attend.

Saturday, October 11, 1 pm to 4 pm, COMING HOME: FINDING PEACE AT THE HOME FRONT
Join in a panel discussion of the history and issues related to post-deployment, PTSD and MST, as well as information for veterans, families, and friends on how to deal with these transitioning concerns. Panelists: Janice E. McInally, MS, LMFT (Reconnection Workshop), Professor Carol Burke (UCI), Dr. Virginia Schoenfeld (US Navy veteran and co-founder of The B.R.E.A.T.H. Center), and Brent Theobald (USMC and former Director of Veterans Affairs at Vanguard University). Also on the panel is author Caitlin Theobald, who will talk about addressing PTSD in a way that children can understand it through her children’s book The Dog Tag Tales: Maxwell Finds a Friend.

Friday, October 17, 12 noon to 4 pm, WOMEN WARRIORS: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
This program features the history and contributions of women in the military, the unique challenges that they face in and out of the military and information on reintegration resources available for women veterans. U.S. Army veteran and member of the Board of Trustees of Rancho Santiago Community College District, Nelida Mendoza Yanez, will introduce the keynote speaker, Associate Justice Eileen Moore, CA Court of Appeal (Lt. U.S. Army Nurse Corps, served in Vietnam).
Susana Ortiz Salgado, PhD, will be the panel moderator. Panelists are: Associate Professor Kyndra Rotunda (Chapman University) discussing the development of women’s presence in the military; US Marine veteran, Adriana Gibson, on the personal and professional challenges faced by women in the military; and Gina Gutierrez-Rawson, Veterans Administration, Women Veterans Program Manager, covering resources available for female veterans as they transition out of the military.

Saturday, October 18, 2 pm to 4 pm, WHAT IT IS LIKE TO GO TO WAR
Join us for a dynamic book discussion of CA Reads selection What It Is like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes. Written nearly 40 years after his own tour of duty in Vietnam, Marlantes recounts his experience of going to war and coming home through the lens of time. He offers readers a window into the mind, heart, and soul of combat veterans. The book brings awareness of the human costs of war for individuals, families, and communities and raises searching questions about the way in which we prepare for war and cope with its aftermath.

The discussion will be led by Marvin J. Wolf, who served in the U.S. Army. In 1965 he was deployed to Vietnam and by 1966 earned the Bronze Star, Air Medal and Purple Heart. Mr. Wolf’s newest book, Abandoned in Hell: The Fight for Vietnam’s Fire Base Kate, will be published by Penguin/Random House in March 2015.

ENTENDIENDO LA TEMATICA DE LOS VETERANOS DE GUERRA A TRAVÉS DE PELÍCULAS, TALLERES, ARTE Y LIBROS

SANTA ANA, CA – La Biblioteca Pública de Santa Ana continúa su serie de programas subsidiados por California Reads War Comes Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front. Estos programas son parte de un esfuerzo estatal para proporcionar a las comunidades locales con una nueva perspectiva sobre la variedad de problemas que enfrentan los veteranos que regresan, crear un mejor entendimiento y una comunicación abierta entre los miembros de la comunidad y los hombres y mujeres activados/retirados del servicio militar.

Sábado, 11 de octubre, 1 pm a 4 pm, REGRESANDO A CASA: ENCONTRANDO PAZ EN EL FRENTE DOMESTICO (Coming Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front)
Pase una tarde con expertos quienes discutirán la historia y problemática relacionada con el PTSD (Trastorno por Estrés Post Traumático) y MST (Trauma Sexual Militar), así como información para veteranos, familias y amigos sobre cómo manejar estas inquietudes durante la transición a la vida civil. Entre los panelistas estarán: Janice E. McInally, MS, LMFT (Taller de Reconexión), Profesora Carol Burke (UCI), Dr. Virginia Schoenfeld (Veterana Naval y cofundadora del B.R.E.A.T.H Center) y Brent Theobald (USMC y ex Director de Asuntos Veteranos en la Universidad Vanguard). Viernes, 17 de octubre, 12 pm a 4 pm, MUJERES GUERRERAS: PASADO, PRESENTE Y FUTURO
Este programa presenta la historia y contribuciones de la mujer militar, los desafíos únicos que enfrentan dentro y fuera del ejército e información sobre recursos de reinserción en la vida civil. Nélida Mendoza Yanez, Veterana del Ejército de EU y miembro de la Junta de Administradores del Distrito del Colegio Comunitario Rancho Santiago, introducirá a la invitada especial, Juez Asociada del Tribunal de Apelaciones de California, Eileen Moore, (Teniente del Cuerpo de Enfermeras de EU, que sirvió en Vietnam).
Susana Ortiz Salgado, PhD, será la moderadora del panel. Los panelistas son: la Profesora Asociada Kyndra Rotunda (Universidad de Chapman). Profesora Rotunda presentara una breve historia de la presencia femenina en las fuerzas armadas. Adriana Gibson, veterana de la Marina de EU, hablara sobre los retos personales y profesionales que enfrentan las mujeres en las fuerzas armadas y Gina Gutierrez-Rawson, de la Administración de Veteranos, Gerente del Programa de Mujeres Veteranas, dará a conocer los recursos disponibles para las mujeres veteranas al regresar a la vida civil.

Sábado, 18 de octubre, 2 pm a 4 pm, COMO ES IR A LA GUERRA (What It Is Like to go to War)
Únase a una dinámica discusión del libro seleccionado por California Reads, Como es ir a la Guerra por Karl Marlantes. Escrito hace casi 40 años después de su servicio en Vietnam, Marlantes narra su experiencia de ir a la guerra y su regreso a casa. Marlantes ofrece a los lectores la mente, el corazón y el alma del militar al enfrentar la fría realidad del combate. El libro crea conciencia sobre el sacrificio humano que conlleva una guerra y como afecta a individuos, familias y comunidades. Marlantes plantea preguntas indagadoras sobre la manera en que nos preparamos para la guerra y como enfrentamos sus consecuencias. La discusión será moderada por Marvin J. Wolf, que sirvió en el Ejército de EU y en 1965 fue desplegado a Vietnam. Wolf recibió la Estrella de Bronce, la Air Medal y la medalla de Corazón Púrpura en el 1966. El nuevo libro del Wolf, Abandonado en el Infierno: La Lucha por la Base de Fuego Kate en Vietnam, será publicado por Penguin/Random House en marzo de 2015.
