Troopers Apprehend Theft Suspects after Pursuit

Lowell Post – Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, troopers from the Lowell Post were contacted by the Michigan City Police Department for assistance with a vehicle they were pursuing. Michigan City units were in pursuit of a west bound Orange Dodge Caliber on I-94 near the 34 mile marker.

The occupants of the Caliber were allegedly involved in the theft of alcohol valued at several hundred dollars from a local Meijer store.

Troopers picked up the west bound pursuit near the 26 mile marker and were able to successfully deploy stop sticks in the area of the 21 mile marker. The stop sticks disabled the vehicle and all four occupants fled on foot. The driver and one other occupant were quickly apprehended by Trooper Kenneth Watkins and Lieutenant Pete Wood after a foot chase. The other two subjects were located and arrested by Burns Harbor Police Department around 8:30 p.m.

The driver Roy C. Staples, 25, of Chicago, was arrested by state police for felony resisting arrest. The three other passengers will face theft charges that will be filed by Michigan City Police Department. Their information was not available at the time of the release.

*All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
