Suspected Intoxicated Semi-Tractor Trailer Driver Arrested after Crash

Boone County, IN- A semi-tractor trailer driver is in the Boone County jail this evening charged with operating while intoxicated after being involved in a five vehicle crash.

Early this evening at approximately 5:23 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers responded to a personal injury crash on I-65 SB at the 135.2 mm that also spilled over into the NB lanes.

Preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed that Barbara Eubanks, of Indianapolis, was sitting stationary in a 2008 Mercury passenger car with the emergency flashers in operation on the SB emergency shoulder of I-65 at the 135.2 mm. The Mercury also contained a 32 year old male passenger and an infant male.

Jerry Ramey, 42, of Richmond KY was operating a 2014 Peterbuilt semi-tractor with a flat bed trailer SB on I-65 at the 135.2 mm and sideswiped the stationary Mercury. The semi-tractor trailer then swerved to the left and traveled through the median guard rail. Wreckage from the guard rail and semi-tractor trailer struck three NB vehicles and caused property damage. No injuries were reported by any of the occupants in the NB vehicles.

The automotive parts being hauled on the semi-tractor trailer became unrestrained during the crash and came to rest on the NB lanes of I-65.

Eubanks and the two occupants of the Mercury were transported to Methodist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Ramey was not injured.

During the course of the investigation Trooper Neal Berringer obtained information that Ramey was allegedly operating the semi-tractor while intoxicated. Ramey was transported to the Boone County Jail where a certified test confirmed his BAC .18%.

Ramey was incarcerated in the Boone County Jail and charged with one count of operating while intoxicated, Class A Misdemeanor.

Both north and southbound lanes were compromised during the investigation. All southbound lanes are now open, however NB has only one lane open at the crash scene while the wreckage is being removed. The lane closure is anticipated to be at least another hour.
