Resident Alert – Suspicious Circumstances

The Sausalito Police Department would like to alert Sausalito citizens of two recent suspicious circumstances.

The first incident involves two women soliciting donations for a college trip. While we all have had a solicitor or two come to our doors attempting to selling magazines, these women wanted donations to help pay for trip to Spain. The police later questioned these women and it appears they have no affiliation to a college. This case is under investigation.

In the second incident, a man claiming to be a plumber working at a neighbor’s house, wanted to enter a resident’s home to see if his work negatively impacted their water supply. As proof of employment, the man showed the resident he was wearing a shirt with the plumbing company’s logo on it. The resident wisely told the man “no.” The man left the area before police arrived. Police contacted the plumbing company and were told the man was not one of their employees. This case is also under investigation.

While the man’s actual motives are unknown, we can assume that he was in the area ‘casing’ the neighborhood. A suspect can attempt to ‘blend in’ to a neighborhood by giving the appearance that they are a utility worker or a solicitor. However, if confronted by a resident, the suspect will provide an explanation that will sound suspicious or farfetched. The suspect will lack proper company identification cards and/or appear to be in a hurry to leave the area once contacted.

In both of these above incidents, the residents were suspicious of the people’s motives and contacted the police.

As a reminder: If you are ever suspicious of the person coming up to your door or just get a “bad feeling” about someone, don’t open the door or quickly end your conversation and shut your door. Contact the police department immediately. The sooner you call the police, the more likely officers will be able to locate the person. The call taker will ask you a few questions about what the person looked like, what he/she was wearing, vehicle description, and direction of travel.

Remember: Community awareness is the key to identifying criminal activity and reducing the impact of crime on our city.
