The Goleta Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Friday night, September 26, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.  

DUI checkpoints are conducted in specific locations of frequent impaired driving arrests.  Our goal is to deter impaired driving by apprehending the impaired drivers, and also educating the public towards safe driving.

A driver with a blood alcohol content of .08% or more is considered an impaired driver, along with a driver under the influence of any drugs, alcohol or a combination of drugs/alcohol, which impair their physical or mental abilities to drive a vehicle with the same prudent care as of a sober person.  Drugs that might impair a driver could be any illicit drugs or prescribed medications.  If it causes impairment, then you could get arrested for DUI, even if you’ve been prescribed the medication.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses which can exceed $10,000, not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

“No one wants to hear that their friends or family members were killed by an impaired driver” said Senior Deputy Jeff Farmer of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.  “Impaired driving is a choice made by the driver and it could be easily avoided by having responsible people out there making good judgment decisions to find another way to their destination rather than driving themselves when they’ve consumed alcohol or drugs.” 

Everyone can help out with the message of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”.  If you should see someone you believe to be driving while impaired, don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1!
