Prescription Drug Take Back Day Being Held at Malibu/Lost Hills Station This Saturday, September 27th
This Saturday, September 27th, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is hosting it's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Citizens can drop off their expired, unwanted, or unused prescription drugs at any drop-off location throughout the country. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is one of about 4,000 participating law enforcement agencies that are accepting these drugs, a free and anonymous service. Please note that only pills and solids (such as patches) will be accepted, liquids and needles will still need to be disposed of in an appropriate manner.
According to the DEA's website, unused medications in homes are commonly stolen, misused, abused, or accidently ingested. A survey found that the majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends of the abuser. Another problem with unused prescription drugs left around the home is that they commonly get flushed down the toilet or get thrown in the trash, which only contaminates water supplies or results in theft and abuse of prescription drugs. It is because of this that the DEA created a program to rid homes of as many drugs as possible.
Last April, Americans turned in over 780,000 pounds of prescription drugs. Please bring any qualifying drugs to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station on Saturday, September 27th. Cardboard boxes will be labeled for your convenience.
