Full Notification

On 09/24/2014 just after 10:30 am, Steuben County 911 received a call regarding a small child found walking along the roadway in the 2800 block of north CR 400 W near Crooked Lake in rural Steuben County. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call and located a 4 year old child who was bare foot wearing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Sheriff’s detectives were then called to the scene to assist. After an initial canvass of the area by deputies and concerned neighbors, a possible residence where the child came from was located in the 2600 block of north CR 400 W. Through investigative efforts, the child’s mother was identified as 27 year old Wendy M. Davis. Davis had allegedly left the child inside the residence without notifying anyone, and the child was able to get outside and walk away. Davis was subsequently interviewed by Sheriff’s detectives and was later placed under arrest at the Sheriff’s Office. Davis was booked into the Steuben County Jail on one count of neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony. Davis remains held without bond pending an initial court appearance. The Steuben County Department of Child Services assisted the Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
