Making Sausalito Roads Safer

On Sunday, September 21, 2014, the Sausalito Police Department in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, conducted directed patrols of Sausalito streets with the emphasis on providing education on California’s new law requiring the safe overtaking of bicyclists. The new law that went into effect on September 16, 2014, titled the “Three Feet for Safety Act” (21760 CVC), requires that a motorist passing or overtaking a bicyclist to allow for a three foot safety corridor between the two.

Two CHP motorcycle officers and one Sausalito motorcycle officer patrolled Sausalito’s main thoroughfare for violations of the new law but did not see any during their six-hour team enforcement effort.

The motorcycle officers did make several enforcement stops for other violations while focusing their efforts at pedestrian and bicycle safety. They issued nine citations and twenty warnings to bicyclists and another ten warnings to motorists.
