Run for the Arts Color Run and Mercury Rising Chili Festival, Saturday September 27th, 2014

Huntsville, Alabama (September 23, 2014) The Arts Council 5K Color Run is scheduled to occur in downtown Huntsville Saturday September 27, 2014. Lowe Avenue will be closed between Gallatin Street and Williams Avenue at 6:30 AM on Friday, September 26th, in preparation for the run on Saturday. The road closure is for set-up of tents, booths, a stage and other necessary structures in and along Lowe Avenue.

The race will have between 5000 and 6000 people participating, along with about 260 workers and volunteers working the event. The race will start at 9:00 AM with 500 to 700 runners leaving the starting line on the designated course. 500 to 700 other runners/walkers will then follow every five to seven minutes. It is estimated that the last runners/walkers will be on the course between 10:00 to 10:10 AM. Even though this is called a race, there will be no timing of the participants and the vast majority will jog or walk the entire course. With this number of runners/walkers, the course will be a solid mass of people along the entire route, which in turn will force a closure of some of the roadways. The last runners/walkers should finish the route between 11:15 to 11:30.

As stated above, some of the roadways in the downtown area will be closed due to the sheer number of people participating in this event. Alternate routes have been designated in downtown Huntsville that will allow vehicles to have access adjacent to the closed area and come and go as they wish. Another limited access route will be used at the starting line to get vehicles into and out of the closed area for people who have to get into certain buildings downtown.

We will also be working with Leadership Huntsville/Madison County to use the limited access route into the closed area as they set-up for the Mercury Rising Chili Festival. That event will start at 10:00 AM in Big Spring International Park. The City of Huntsville Parking Garages located on Monroe & Church Streets will be open, along Von Braun Center South Hall Parking Garage.
