IN COOPERATION WITH THE SAN MATEO UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
Suspect Involved in Lewd Acts Has Been Identified and Arrested by SMPD
This is an updated media release and community alert in regards to the original release distributed by SMPD on September 19th, 2014.
UPDATE: On September 19th, just after 7:30 PM an on duty San Mateo Police Sergeant noticed a vehicle near the police department’s public parking lot that was similar to the vehicle involved in the prior report of lewd activity that occurred on Thursday, September 11th, near San Mateo High School. The officer moved quickly to investigate further and contacted the driver of the vehicle who had coincidentally come to SMPD for an unrelated matter. Through a coordinated effort with the SMPD Investigations Bureau, the Detective in charge of the case located the victims from the prior incident and brought them to SMPD where they positively identified the driver as the suspect in the case. The driver was subsequently arrested.
Additional investigation by SMPD Detectives has determined that the suspect was the perpetrator in the incident that occurred earlier that same day on September 19th in the Woodlake Shopping Center. In addition, SMPD Detectives are diligently working to confirm his alleged involvement in a third incident of similar conduct reported on September 19th at about 7:45 PM near the San Mateo Downtown Cal Train Station where a male was reportedly seen masturbating in the area.
SMPD wishes to thank the undaunted and courageous efforts of the victims in this case who made the conscious effort to come forward for the betterment of our community and it was through their commitment that SMPD was able to arrest the perpetrator of these lewd acts. SMPD fully investigates all incidents of lewd activity and indecent exposure because, although such acts may a first glance seem harmless, these crimes can be indicative of the perpetrator’s potential willingness to commit more serious crimes in the future. SMPD is again thankful that the victims in this case willfully served as our “eyes and ears” and allowed the perpetrator to be located, identified, and arrested for his crimes.
SMPD wishes to remind you that the best partner for our commitment to public safety is an undivided attention to your own personal safety. Despite the seemingly unavoidable daily distractions in all of our lives, we ask that you remain vigilant and always be aware of your surroundings. Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood or wherever your day takes you. Trust your instincts and when in doubt, call 911 and report what you see. Stand up and be our “eyes and ears” for the good of our community. Through this collaboration with your police department we will work together to keep our neighborhoods safe.
