Prescription drug abuse in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate along with the rate of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Many of the unused or expired prescription medications that are kept in the home are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. This program provides a proper, safe, anonymous and easy way to dispose of these potentially harmful substances.
