Beware of phone scams. People claiming to be relatives in trouble.

Be aware of scam calls. If you get a call from someone claiming to be a relative who is in trouble and asks you to send them money, it may be a scam. If you get such a call, verify that the person calling is actually whom they claim to be. Ask them a question that they should know the answer to (where they went to school, where they work, name of pet, etc…).

Recently, Monterey Park residents have been getting calls from people claiming to be their grandchild. The caller states that they have been arrested and need money. The caller asks the victim to buy prepaid Mastercard or Visa credit cards and give them the card number over the phone.

If you believe it to be a scam call, hang up. You can then contact your relative ( the person who the caller claimed to be) and verify. Please contact the Monterey Park Police Department if you received such a call or have any questions. (626) 573-1311.
