Vandals Strike Veterans Cemetery
Jefferson County: Yesterday afternoon Trooper Nate Adams responded to the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison in reference to a vandalism complaint. It was reported to Tpr. Adams that an unknown vehicle had been driven into the grassy area near the headstones and appeared to have done a “burnout.” There were tracks or ruts in the lawn indicating the driver was accelerating rapidly causing the tires to spin leaving approximately 89 feet of damaged sod. It is believed the damage occurred sometime late Wednesday, September 16 or in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 17. Officials at the cemetery reported this wasn’t the first time such an incident has occurred. They said last year Madison Police Department took a similar report where a vehicle did “doughnuts” in the cemetery however no suspects were ever identified. It is unknown if the same individual(s) were involved in both incidents or if there are two separate people responsible for the damage. Anyone who may have any information regarding this incident or similar incidents in the past are requested to contact Tpr. Nate Adams at the ISP Versailles Post at 812-689-5000. Callers can remain anonymous.
