- RED FLAG WARNING -
SANTA BARBARA, Ca. September 15, 2014 – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Santa Barbara County Mountains (zone CAZ252) valid through 9 pm Tuesday.
Red Flag Warning Duration: Extended to 9 pm Tuesday September 16th.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can create extreme fire behavior.
The national weather service has issued a Red Flag Warning due to very hot and unstable weather conditions with moderately low humidities. Weak offshore flow each morning will give way to weak onshore flow each afternoon through Tuesday. This combined with an upper level ridge of high pressure will maintain a prolonged heat wave through Tuesday with most locations away from the coast ranging between 100 and 110 degrees. Minimum humidities will generally range from 15 to 25 percent. These conditions will continue to bring elevated fire danger across southern California through Tuesday especially considering the very dry fuels. Mountain areas will be especially vulnerable to large plume dominated fires over the next few days prompting the red flag warnings. In addition, sundowner winds will continue each night through the middle of the week with local gusts in the 20 to 30 mph range.
As a result of the issuance of the Red Flag Warning, citizens should take appropriate precautions. These precautions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Report any sign of smoke immediately to your local fire department by calling 911 (if your call 911 from your cell phone, you must know your location).
• Use extreme caution when operating spark of flame producing machinery in hazardous grass or brush areas.
• Have an evacuation plan in place and identify two exit routes from your neighborhood. If you are asked to evacuate by fire or law enforcement officials, do so immediately.
• Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to law enforcement.
