Capital Murder Suspect Shot and Killed after Opening Fire at Police

(HOUSTON, TX) - A wanted capital murder suspect was killed in east Harris County on Thursday after opening fire against officers with the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitives Task Force (GCVOFTF)

Capital murder suspect James Earl Nicholas was shot and killed by officers with the GCVOFTF after he opened fire against them as they were trying to arrest him and his accomplice on capital murder charges.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, members of the task force located Nicholas, 48, and Kimberly Cormier, 40, at an apartment complex in the 14200 block of Nimitz. They were driving the vehicle stolen during the murder of Jose Bonilla earlier this month.

The suspects fled from GCVOTF officers until they crashed the vehicle in the 10200 block of Jacinto Port. There, suspect Nicholas exchanged gunfire with GCVOTF officers and was shot and killed. Suspect Cormier received minor injuries.

Cormier later provided HCSO homicide Investigators with a statement linking Nicholas to Jose Bonilla’s murder on Sept. 8; the murder of Katherine Gingrich and Johnny Holcomb at 14235 Alderson on Sept. 2; and a third murder being investigated by the Houston Police Department.

Suspect photos are not available.
