Impaired Driver Airlifted after Multiple Vehicle Crash

Vigo County—Last evening at 11:39, Indiana State Police and Vigo County emergency agencies responded to a multiple vehicle crash on US 40 at Stop 19 Street in eastern Vigo County.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Saturn Vue, driven by 36-year-old Thomas M. Williams Jr .of Terre Haute, was eastbound on US 40 and struck a 2000 Dodge Durango, driven by 21-year-old Brittany M. Shepard of Terre Haute, in the rear. The Shepard vehicle was stopped attempting to make a left turn onto Stop 19th Street. The impact forced the Shepard vehicle into two parked cars with one of the parked vehicles striking a residence at 9276 East US 40. After the initial collision, the disabled Williams vehicle remained in the passing of lane of US 40 and was struck by an eastbound 2007 Ford F-150 driven by 51-year-old Nasser N. Moses III of Terre Haute, IN.

Thomas M. Williams was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of extensive internal injuries. Williams was cited for Operating While Intoxicated-Endangerment; Operating with BAC above .15%; and speed too fast to avoid a collision. William’s preliminary BAC results were .41%, nearly five times the legal limit for intoxication.

Brittany Shepard was taken by a third party to Union Hospital for complaint of neck and back pain, Nasser N. Moses III was not injured, and no injuries were reported from the home.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Michael Featherling. Assisting were the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Lost Creek Fire/Rescue, Trans Care EMS, and IU Health air ambulance.
