APD warning citizens of tailgate thefts occurring in Amarillo.

In the past few weeks there have been several reports of tailgates being stolen off of pick-up trucks. The thefts have occurred mainly during the nighttime hours; however a few occurred during the day. Some of these thefts are happening on residential streets, while others occurred in business parking lots (car lots, schools, shopping centers, etc.).

If you have a tailgate that is lockable, please take a couple of seconds and make sure it is locked. If your PU is an older model that is not lockable, an aftermarket lock is available and would provide some resistance to the thief’s attempt.

Additionally, if you see someone prowling around in a parking lot or residential street looking at pick-up’s please contact the Amarillo Police Department as soon as possible.

In some of the thefts, witnesses have described a suspect vehicle as being an older model Suburban possibly being driven by an H/M with a B/M passenger.

Anyone with information of these thefts is also asked to call Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400, or submit a tip on line at amapolice.org.
