Detective charges Old Fort woman (Tia Chappell) with bigamy for allegedly being married to multiple men
Detective Andy Manis of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Tia Carter Chappell, 33, of Polly Noblitt Road in Old Fort, with one felony count each of bigamy and perjury.
On July 9, the McDowell County Register of Deeds Office reported that Chappell obtained a marriage license from the office on July 1, swearing to officials there that it was her first marriage.
Manis said an investigation revealed that the most recent marriage was Chappell’s third. She married a man in Cabarrus County on Sept. 25, 2000 and another one in Cabarrus County on Sept. 17, 2010.
Manis stated that Chappell had allegedly not divorced her first two husbands before remarrying in McDowell in July.
