Beach Team on Patrol This Summer in #Malibu @CityMalibu #LASD
Malibu/Lost Hills Summer Enforcement Beach Team Hits the Sand in Malibu.
If you have been to Zuma Beach at all this summer, you have probably noticed a group of deputies dressed in green shorts and riding around on matching quads… well that would be the Malibu/Lost Hills Beach Team. The team was selected from a group of hard working deputies assigned to the Malibu/ Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station to work their 40 hour work week on the beach during the busy summer months. The Sheriff’s Department works closely with the city of Malibu, deploying a summer enforcement team during the City’s peak visitor season, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with one additional weekend following Labor Day.
Lieutenant Jim Royal and Sergeant Fray Lupian hand picked the team this year, as the high volume of beachgoers during the summer necessitates a team of deputies to patrol all the beaches within our jurisdiction. From the east end of Malibu to the west end, and all the pocket beaches in between, deputies are assigned to specific areas to ride sand-friendly quads and ensure that laws are being respected. Because Malibu beaches attract travelers from across the world, it is common that many visitors are unaware of the beach laws and county laws. In order to ensure the family oriented atmosphere that Malibu promotes, the beach team spends much of their time educating the public of the laws as well as enforcing them.
While being a member of the beach team may seem like an easy way to spend the summer, the team is actually responsible for handling and assisting in many different emergencies. This summer, the team stood watch over the beach during last month’s overseas hurricane season which produced swells on our own beaches. They conducted patrol checks and traffic control to ensure the safety of beachgoers, making sure that everyone was aware of the dangerous surf. The beach team was first to respond to a cliff rescue when a 15-year old male fell from the rocks at Point Dume. They assisted lifeguards during a drowning last month, and they also helped parents to find children that had gone missing in the crowds of people. However, the most common task they have while in patrol is DUI suppression, locating and citing people that are drinking alcohol on the sand. Los Angeles County has a strict no-alcohol law to prevent people from drinking too much while on the beach, and driving home impaired as a result.
The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station promotes a positive relationship with the community they serve, and this is expected of the deputies as well. The beach team deputies understand that while they are working in a casual environment consisting of both local residents and visitors from afar, they must also be dedicated to enforcing the law to ensure the safety of everyone during their time in the sand.
