DUI Checkpoints remind community to stay safe this weekend
Chula Vista, CA – Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI / Drivers License Checkpoint on 08-28-14, in the 300 block of Broadway, city of Chula Vista and on 08-31-14 in the 300 block of East H Street between the hours of 6p.m. and 3a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.
On 08-28-14 in the city of Chula Vista,
1,080 vehicles traveled thru the checkpoint
494 vehicles were screened
11 drivers conducted field sobriety tests
1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage
1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. This driver was also in possession of a controlled substance for sales.
1 driver was cited for possession of marijuana
4 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license
11 drivers were cited for driving when unlicensed
7 vehicles were impounded
13 citations were issued for various traffic violations
On 08-31-14
2,573 vehicles traveled thru the checkpoint
703 vehicles were screened
6 drivers conducted field sobriety tests
1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. This driver was also in possession of stolen property.
1 driver was arrested for an outstanding warrant
8 drivers were cited for driving when unlicensed
4 vehicles were impounded
11 citations were issued for various traffic violations
The Chula Vista PD will be conducting additional DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints through out the remainder of the year in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.
