School safety for the new school year

A new school year starts tomorrow for Torrance students!  Here are some basic safety tips for parents, students and drivers:

Getting to School:

  • Allow plenty of time to get to school
  • Map out a safe way for your children to get to school
  • Encourage your children to use the “buddy system”
  • Point out places that your children should avoid (vacant lots, alleys, etc.)
  • Teach your children to never speak to strangers
  • Teach your children to be aware of their surroundings and beware of slow moving vehicles and parked vehicles that appear to be occupied

After School:

  • Have your children check in with an adult when they get home
  • Show them how to properly lock the door
  • Make sure they know to never open the door to strangers
  • Find a trusted neighbor who will allow your children to come over in         case of emergency
  • Establish strict rules regarding Internet usage

Bullying:

  • Listen to your children to talk about their day
  • If your children tell you that they have been bullied take it seriously
  • Watch for signs of bullying such as withdrawal, drop in grades or new friends
  • Notify the school immediately if you think your children have been bullied
  • Praise your children when they are kind to others
  • Teach children self-protection skills, how to walk confidently, stay alert to the their surroundings, and to stand up for themselves verbally
  • Parents and students should be aware of their surroundings and if you see something suspicious, say something by calling the police
  • Have the non-emergency number pre-programmed in your child’s phone (310-328-3456)
  • Make sure your children know how to call 9-1-1

Traffic Safety:

Motorists should be aware that large groups of children will be on sidewalks and crossing streets before and after school and many do not pay attention to vehicle traffic.

Motorists need to be alert for sudden movements into the roadway by children riding bicycles or walking to and from school.

Parents and drivers are encouraged to allow sufficient time to drive their children to school and not to double park to allow passengers to exit the vehicle.

Drivers should avoid any activity that distracts them while driving.

Parents are urged to talk with their children and discuss the importance of crossing the roadway at marked intersections or within crosswalks.

Teach your children to pay attention to traffic signals and use intersections with crosswalks.
