On Saturday August 30, 2014, at 1:47 PM, officers responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash in the 3100 block of West IH-40, east bound lanes. According to witnesses, a green 2001 GMC pickup was traveling east bound on IH-40, swerving and failing to maintain a single lane of traffic. The vehicle struck the center cement barrier in the 3100 block of West IH-40. The driver was not wearing his seat belt and was partly thrown out of his window upon impact with center barrier. The partially ejected driver then struck a light pole and was ejected from the pickup. His vehicle continued to travel east bound and came to a final stop in the 2700 block of West IH-40. The driver was later identified as Aaron Clay Crawford age 25 of Amarillo. Mr. Crawford died at the crash scene. Justice of the Peace Jackson was called to the scene, along with the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department. JP Jackson ordered an autopsy. Alcohol and failure to wear a seat belt are believed to be contributing factors to this fatal collision. Officers were at the scene investigating this accident for just over two hours.
