Indiana State Police Sergeant Recognized for Life Saving Action

Recently, a Service and Valor Awards Ceremony was held at the Indiana Government Center for Indiana State Police employees. During the ceremony, Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter and his primary staff recognized the lifesaving action of an Indiana State Police motorcycle sergeant.

The lifesaving award is awarded to an employee or citizen for extraordinary conduct in saving the life of a fellow human being.

Early afternoon, March 26th, 2013 at approximately 12:00 p.m., Indiana State Police Sergeant Pornteb Nathalang, of the Enforcement Division, came upon a property damage crash on I-65 near the 111.8 mm. While assessing the crash of the 2009 Chevrolet work van, Sgt. Nathalang realized the driver, Benjamin Lindley, 48, of Indianapolis, was in full cardiac arrest. Sgt. Nathalang removed Lindley from his vehicle and performed CPR until relieved by the Indianapolis Fire Department emergency medical personnel. Lindley was transported to Methodist Hospital and survived.

Crash investigators learned that Lindley was speaking with his fiancée on the phone and complained that he felt ill. While the vehicle was still in motion Lindley lost consciousness and drove into the side of a semi-tractor trailer and the vehicles came to rest. The driver of the semi-tractor trailer was not injured.

Mr. Lindley’s survival is attributed to the CPR and medical procedures administered by Sgt. Nathalang and emergency medical personnel of the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Nathalang is a 29 year veteran and is the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne District Motorcycle Patrol Sergeant.
