Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station- ***Training Exercise*** Active Shooter Drill at Pepperdine University

Title: The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station Conducts Active Shooter Training at Pepperdine University

Narrative:

As part of its ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and the community as a whole, law enforcement and fire agencies throughout Southern California partnered with Pepperdine University last week to conduct the annual Active Shooter Drill.  The drill focused on four key areas: Prevention, Intervention, Rescue, and Family Reunification. By using Pepperdine University as a host campus, the Malibu/Lost Hills Station worked with other participating agencies to sharpen and develop skills that they can use at any campus in our area.  While prevention efforts occur year-round, recent active shooter incidents have necessitated both law enforcement and fire agencies to identify innovative strategies to hasten rescue efforts.

The Active Shooter Drill is a scenario style training course that takes law enforcement and fire officials through a school setting where at least one gunman is at large and considered a threat to students, staff, and law enforcement.  Students at Pepperdine University volunteered to act as victims and were each assigned different victim roles in the scenario.  The purpose of the training is to prepare safety officials for a potential school shooting in a statistically realistic setting.  Law enforcement officers and fire personnel were trained to evaluate and eliminate the threat, while also helping to ensure the safety of the victims inside.

This year's Active Shooter Drill involved multiple agencies from LAPD, CHP, Coast Guard, LA County Fire Department, and McCormick Ambulance.  Specialized units from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department included Special Enforcement Bureau, Tactics and Survival, as well as other LASD stations such as West Hollywood.  This year's drill was different than in past years, in that it involved LA County Fire's Tactical EMS program working alongside LASD in an effort to respond to potential victims in the quickest, safest manner possible.  Historically, medical response to potential victims has occurred only when the threat has been neutralized; recent active shooter incidents have caused rescue agencies to identify new strategies to make rescue efforts more effective.  Because of recent school shooting incidences, it has become necessary for law enforcement and EMS personnel to enter facilities together in order to quickly and effectively rescue victims.

Each year, law enforcement and fire agencies work together to develop training that will help to ensure the safety of the community members.  While the tactics of the suspects are ever changing, we can help combat these threats by training our emergency responders to be tactically aware and educated in ways to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
