8-19-14, press release: Suspicious Event
On August 18, 2014, at 2:55 pm, Burlington Police Officers, assigned to the Burlington International Airport, were summoned to a passenger screening point for the report of an unloaded gun that was discovered while screening a passenger’s luggage. The firearm is a Bernardelli (small handgun) .22 cal. Model 80.
Officers spoke with the owner of the firearm, who advised he frequently travels with this particular luggage when hiking and mistakenly forgot to remove the firearm. The firearm was checked via the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and was reportedly clear. The owner’s criminal history was also checked, per protocol, and he has no recorded criminal history.
As per protocol the FBI Field Office in Burlington was provided with the information.
The owner of the weapon was allowed to continue on his travels. The weapon was taken and secured at the Burlington Police Department and may be released upon completion of the investigation. At this time there is no indication that this incident was planned.
The name of the owner of the weapon can be released upon completion of the investigation.
