Sonoma County Sheriff's Office Property Crimes Detectives arrest a check fraud suspect while he was in jail on other charges.

On August 19, 2014, at approximately 1:00PM, Sonoma County Sheriff Office Property Crime Detectives arrested Steven Anthony Sanez, 24 years of age, of Santa Rosa, for multiple Commercial Burglaries, Passing Stolen/Altered Checks, ID Theft, and Violation of Probation. Sanez was on probation from a previous ID Theft conviction.

The victim, a Larkfield resident, called the Sheriff’s Office on August 14, 2014, after he was alerted by an employee of the California Check Cashing store in Santa Rosa that Sanez was attempting to pass a check. The check was from the account of the victim. The employee was trying to verify if the victim had written the check to Sanez, which he had not.

Between August 10th and 14th, Sanez passed two fraudulent checks at the California Check Cashing store. He attempted to cash two other checks, but the employees were suspicious of those two checks. Further crime was prevented when they refused to cash them for him. All four checks were in different amounts and none were over $800.

The employees positively identified Sanez in photographic lineups. He also used his valid California Identification Card for identification at the time he attempted to cash the fraudulent checks.

On August 15, 2014, Sanez was arrested by the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety for an outstanding arrest warrant for violation of his probation. Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office PCI Detectives interviewed him at the jail.

Sanez was then re-booked at the County Jail for violation of two counts of Commercial Burglary, two counts of Attempted Commercial Burglary, four counts of Passing/Possession of Altered checks, ID Theft, and Violation of Probation.

Sanez has a No Bail hold due to his probation violation. He has yet to be assigned a court date for these new charges.
