30 Pairs of Boots Hit Harris County's Streets

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia’s promise to put more boots on the ground in the unincorporated areas of Harris County moved forward Friday as 30 cadets graduated from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy.

On Friday, August 15, 2014, 30 cadets were sworn into the ranks of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Each cadet held a license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement before entering the five week Modified Basic Peace Officer’s Course.

Among the 30 cadets to graduate into sworn positions as Deputies, 2 were former participants in the Sheriff’s Explorers Program. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office operates the largest Police Explorers Program in the State of Texas. Sheriff’s Explorers participate in a structured extracurricular program sponsored by the Boys Scouts of America. The program is designed to expose young men and women to the law enforcement profession, and indoctrinate the future cadre of Texas peace officers. Deputies C. Velez and G. Hendry Jr. were the first former Explorers to graduate into the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office.

Newly sworn Deputy A. Mendoza is a U.S. Combat Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, former Harris County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer and Detention Sergeant.

The next class of recruits is scheduled to commence September 8, keeping with the Sheriff’s Promise to expand the reach of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
