2nd UPDATE: #LASD-Lakewood Sheriff’s Station, Barricaded Suspect, 8800 blk Artesia Bl., BLF

On Monday, August 18, 2014, at approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Lakewood Sheriff’s Station, responded to an apartment building in the 8800 block of Artesia Boulevard, Bellflower, regarding a 9-1-1 call from a woman. The woman caller stated she was being held hostage by a man who had a gun.

When deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect was holding his girlfriend against her will, inside the apartment.

With the assistance of LASD Crisis Negotiation Team, communication with the reportedly armed suspect was established and remained constant during the hostage situation for over six hours. Additionally, LASD Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) Special Weapons Team deputies arrived on scene and contained the location. During this time, the woman, who was on the second floor of the apartment complex, appeared at a rear window of the apartment and pleaded with SEB deputies to remove her. After throwing her keys to one of the SEB deputies on scene, deputies began the process of rescuing her from the location.

During the rescue effort, the suspect appeared in the window and began struggling with the woman. As a result, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although all attempts were made in an effort to bring about a peaceful resolution, the woman was successfully rescued by SEB deputies unharmed.

Whenever an Officer Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney in addition to investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
