Woman dies while innertubing at Potholes Reservoir
POTHOLES RESERVOIR, Wash. (18AUG2014) – A 30-year-old woman died Sunday afternoon after possibly drowning in the Potholes Reservoir.
Emergency responders were called about 3 p.m. to the north end of Potholes State Park. Witnesses said the woman and at least two others were riding separate innertubes on a channel which feeds the reservoir. The woman fell off her innertube in some rapids and she did not resurface. The water is flowing between 3 and 10 mph in that channel.
Swift water rescue crews from Grant County fire districts 5, 10 and 11, Moses Lake Fire Department and Grant County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded along with sheriff’s deputies and State Park rangers. The woman’s body was recovered about 6:30 p.m.
The woman’s remains are in the care of Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison, whose staff will conduct and autopsy and release her name once her family has been notified. Please contact Coroner Morrison on Monday for that information, 509-765-7601.
The 32,820-acre Potholes Reservoir is south of the City of Moses Lake. It gathers wastewater and return flows from irrigated farmland upstream and stores water for reuse on farmland downstream. It is popular for water recreation, fishing and hunting.
