Update on the August 15, 2014 FTTP Demonstration

Oakland, CA – Last night a group of demonstrators marched through the streets of Oakland. The Oakland Police Department maintained visibility while facilitating the march and providing traffic control for the planned demonstration.

A majority of the crowd was committed to nonviolence. However, some individuals and small groups became violent. Several officers were pepper sprayed and an officer was sent to the hospital after being assaulted by several members of the crowd as he attempted to make an arrest.

A few of the protestors vandalized local businesses, breaking windows and writing graffiti. The police response to these negative actions was restrained. Officers remained focused on the intended goal: to help facilitate peaceful demonstrations and free speech.

Police Chief Sean Whent commended the officers for their tremendous restraint, saying, "Oakland Police officers demonstrated their commitment to the City of Oakland and exhibited a high level of professionalism last night."

The Oakland Police Department made two arrests last evening:
• Just after 7:30 PM at 3rd and Castro streets, a 45-year-old man who is an Oakland resident was arrested for assaulting an officer.
• At about 9:30 PM a 41-year-old man from Hayward was arrested in the 5200 block of Telegraph Avenue for obstructing, delaying and resisting police officers.

As we continue to work to identify the individuals who committed the acts of vandalism and assaulted police officers during last night’s protest, the Oakland Police Department is requesting assistance from the media and the community in identifying those who committed vandalism or assault. Please use the tip lines listed below to contact us if you have any information, video footage or photos.

The Department is focused on working together with the members of the community, businesses, and other City Agencies to ensure a healthy and peaceful environment that cultivates the facilitation of free speech and peaceful demonstrations.

The Oakland Police Department continues to place the highest value on policing in a manner that is both constitutional and ethical. In the event that demonstrations and protests become unlawful, threaten public safety, or incite vandalism or property damage, the Department will respond.
