Two Vehicle Crash Claims One Life
Crown Point-A two vehicle crash yesterday evening at approximately 10:17 p.m. CST on I-65 northbound at the 248.4 mile marker (that is approximately one mile north of the Crown Point exit) has claimed the life of a Chicago woman and sent three others to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Corey DuPuy has revealed that a 2005 Hyundai driven by Alesia M. Crawford 30 of Chicago was stopped on the inside shoulder with the emergency flashers activated because of a flat tire. She was attempting to call for assistance when a 1994 Volvo semi tractor driven by David Lee Westra 26 from Pell Lake, WI was unable to stop and ran over the top of the Hyundai.
The front seat passenger, Jacqueline Brown 53 of Chicago was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger sitting behind the driver, Ana A. C. Williams 30 of Gary, IN was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital Merrillville, IN with a possible broken femur and a concussion. Crawford was taken to St Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point with possible broken ribs. The Hyundai was totaled and the semi had approximately $10,000.00 damage. Westra was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital with complaint of pain and a toxicology test.
I-65 northbound was closed for approximately four hours for cleanup, removal of injured and re-construction of the crash. No citations were given at this time for the crash is still under investigation. It is unsure at this time if alcohol and or drugs were involved at the time of the crash. Families have been notified.
Assisting at the scene were troopers from the Lowell Post, units from the Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Division, Crown Point Fire and Rescue and the Lake County Coroner.
