Torrance Cold Case Murder Conviction 
An Orange County engineer was convicted today of the first-degree murder of a nurse whose body was discovered inside her Torrance apartment in 1979, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
A jury of seven men and five women deliberated just over two days before finding Douglas Gordon Bradford, 62, guilty of the Aug. 29, 1979 murder of Lynne Knight.
Deputy District Attorneys John Lewin and Ethan Milius prosecuted the case.
The 28-year-old nurse had been stabbed more than 15 times and strangled with a homemade wire garrote that was found near her body in her Anza Avenue apartment. Lewin said Bradford and the victim, who was originally from Canada, had dated and later broken up. At the time, he was a California State Long Beach engineering student.
Bradford, who has been out on bail during the trial, was immediately taken into custody. The Costa Mesa resident faces 26 years to life in prison when he returns to court on Oct. 10 for sentencing before Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe.
Lewin said old-fashioned police work by detectives from the Torrance Police Department’s Cold Case Unit eventually helped solve the case, which was filed in May 2009.
Outside of court, Lewin said justice was long overdue. “He got to live a life he never should have had,” Lewin said.
