Congratulations to SMPD Sergeant Dave Norris, First Recipient of the City of San Mateo “Going-The-Extra-Mile” (GEM) Award

Please Join Us at San Mateo City Council Chambers on
Monday, August 18, 2014, at 7:00 PM for the presentation of his award.

The San Mateo Police Department is proud to announce that the first citywide G.E.M. (Going the Extra Mile) Award of Distinction has been awarded to Sergeant Dave Norris and will be presented to him at the upcoming August 18th City Council meeting. The Award of Distinction is the highest award available within the GEM recognition program and is awarded for individual actions that have resulted in a noteworthy positive impact on the City organization or community.

Sergeant Norris was recognized for his groundbreaking work in enhancing the use of social media within the Police Department and creating the framework for expanded use throughout the City organization. Sergeant Norris built “followers” of the Police Department social media to well over 22,000. The Police Department can now communicate with these followers instantly to pass along timely alerts and community messages. This same network has proven extremely valuable to Public Works and other Departments when important alerts, such as mosquito abatement spraying, street closures, or construction information, need to get out to the community quickly.

Additionally, Sergeant Norris has been a key member of many citywide and community committees including the outreach program associated with the High Speed Rail Project. His work on the City’s Design Review Board has ensured that safety and security principles are incorporated into new projects, and his contributions will benefit the City for many years as numerous City projects move into construction and are ultimately completed. Dave is the epitome of how effectively the various departments within our City organization collaborate every day for the greater good of our San Mateo community. Even beyond our City borders, Sergeant Norris is viewed as a nationally recognized Social Media expert and has served as a mentor to other Media Relations departments throughout the United States. He has also been a guest speaker on the topic of Social Media at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference.

We would like to invite everyone who personally knows Dave or has had the privilege of working with him as the SMPD Media Relations Sergeant during the past 5+ years to join us Monday, August 18, at 7:00 PM in the San Mateo City Council Chambers where he will receive his award. Dave is a valued and well respected member of the San Mateo Police Department, and our department family could not be more proud of him. Come join us in congratulating Sergeant Dave Norris for this noteworthy and well deserved accomplishment!

For those of you wishing to celebrate Dave’s accomplishment, but aren’t able to be there in person, you can watch his award ceremony live at:
