21st Annual Gun Melt--Nearly 5,000 Weapons Destroyed and Melted into Construction Materials

Who: Sheriff John Scott, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; Mark Olson, Vice President and General Manager; Gerdau Steel Mill; Chief Arthur Miller, South Pasadena Police Department; Deputy Chief Vito Scattaglia, Department of Motor Vehicles Investigations Division; Commander Don Wood, Long Beach Police Department; Lieutenant Christian Eichenlaub; Manhattan Beach Police Department and Road Maintenance District Engineer David Pilker, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

What: Sheriff Scott and Gerdau officials will announce the destruction of nearly 5,000 weapons confiscated in Los Angeles County and collected through the “Gifts for Guns” program. Over 12 local law enforcement agencies have also contributed weapons for destruction. Annually, Gerdau Steel Mill generously donates its furnace, equipment and personnel to convert these weapons into steel rebar. The weapons that will be destroyed will never again be used to commit a crime or used to threaten or intimidate an innocent victim.

Note: Weapons will be on display and the media will have the opportunity to view the weapons being melted into rebar after the press conference. ***Please wear covered shoes and pants for security purposes.
