SPD/Explorer Vehicle Courtesy Checks

The Sheboygan Police Department and Law Enforcement Explorer Post 2881 will again be working to help prevent thefts from vehicles.  This time we're targeting the Franklin Park Neighborhood on Sheboygan's south side.

Residents in the Franklin Park area and across the city can do their part to help minimize the impact of property crimes like thefts from vehicles and yards by remembering a few simple steps:

1. Lock your car and roll up the windows every time you're away from it, even if it's parked in your driveway.

2. Don't leave keys or valuables in the vehicle, or at least place these items in the glove compartment, console, or under a seat so they are completely out of view.

3. Consider installing motion lights or leave your porch light on overnight to help keep thieves away from your property.  Leaving exterior lights on at night costs just pennies, but is a great investment to avoid the expense of becoming a victim of a property crime.

4. Secure your home by making sure your garage and house doors are locked and any items -- especially bikes -- aren't left out in the yard overnight.  These are easy targets for crimes of opportunity!

5. Consider keeping bushes and trees trimmed neatly so your neighbors and other passers-by can help keep an eye on your property when you're away.

Our failing vehicle rate so far is at about 40%.  This means that 4 in 10 vehicles are prime targets for thieves due to unlocked doors or valuables visible inside.  Would your vehicle pass?  Are you doing your part to ensure that you don't become a victim?

Help us get our community to a 100% passing grade so that this type of theft can be prevented!  Thank you for improving the safety and quality of life for Sheboygan's neighborhoods!
