Stanislaus County Sheriff's Explorers Compete in Stockton

Modesto, CA – Recently, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Explorer Post #226 competed in an Explorer Competition in Stockton CA hosted by the Stockton Police Department and the Stockton Police Youth Activities Program.

Law enforcement Explorer competitions provide young people an opportunity to test their skills, challenge other teams in a variety of police related events and show their knowledge in the field. “I’m very proud of our Explorer Team” said Sheriff Adam Christianson, “after a tough weekend competing against other very well qualified and well trained teams, our team finished first place overall”.

Law enforcement Explorer programs allow young people, interested in a law enforcement career, to begin training well before they’re old enough to attend a police academy. It’s a path, focused on education, to a full time job with the Sheriff’s Office at age 21. Explorer applicants can join Post #226 at age 16 and stay in the program until age 21.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Explorer Program is designed to introduce teens and young adults to the various opportunities available in the field of law enforcement. Our post is chartered by the Boy Scouts of America and is coordinated by full time members of the Sheriff’s Office.

As an Explorer, young people receive training and experience in a variety of areas to help them better understand the field of law enforcement and be better prepared to enter the Academy or the Corrections Academy.

Explorers are required to attend regularly scheduled meetings as directed by the Explorer Program Coordinator. These mandatory meetings are typically held on the weekends, twice a month, at the Sheriff's Office. Explorers are also given the chance to work side-by-side with a full time deputy sheriff while on patrol and with a full time deputy sheriff in our correctional facilities.

Explorers do not carry weapons or engage in direct law enforcement activities. They do not carry handguns, batons, pepper spray or other less than lethal weapons. Explorers are not peace officers and are not authorized to make arrests. The primary goal of an Explorer is to observe and learn from trained professionals at the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Explorers have the opportunity to learn in a wide range of interactive environments including patrol operations, investigations, correctional facilities, records/technology, and administrative services. Explorers also serve their community at safety fairs, community events and charitable functions.
