Arrest for Attempt Theft of a Bicycle and Battery on School Grounds by the SRJC PD (JC 14-0000433)

On August 5, 2014 at approximately 2:00 p.m., a Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) instructor saw two male subjects at a bicycle rack on Scholars Drive, near Bussman Hall. The subjects were attempting to cut a cable lock with a pair of bolt cutters in order to steal a bicycle. The instructor called the SRJC District Police Department and attempted to get a photograph of the thieves with her cell phone. Upon seeing the instructor, the thieves began to walk away, leaving the bicycle. The one subject, later arrested, struck the instructor on the arm as he slapped the cell phone from the instructor’s hand. The subjects then fled on foot, walking towards Elliott Avenue where a SRJC PD police officer observed the subjects.

Upon seeing the marked patrol vehicle, the subjects split up. When the officer attempted to detain one subject, they both fled. Other police officers came on scene and a search for the outstanding subjects was conducted. A SRJC PD officer later located Adam James Demir, a 29 year old Santa Rosa resident, walking northbound on Nordyke Avenue, at Sucher Lane, approximately four blocks from the crime scene. Demir was positively identified as one of the subjects attempting to steal the bicycle by a witness. Demir also had the bolt cutters, other burglary tools, and drug paraphernalia for heroin use on his person.

Demir was arrested for battery on school grounds, attempted petty theft, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
The second subject has not been taken into custody. The Police Department has provided a photograph attached to this Nixle release. The Police Department would like to remind the SRJC community to always keep a close and watchful eye on their personal belongings. A common crime which occurs on campus is the theft of bicycles. It is recommended to secure bicycles to the designated bicycle racks with a quality lock. The SRJC is an open campus and allows the public to use its facilities for educational and enrichment purposes. While the SRJC campuses are relatively safe environments, they are not crime free. Please help the Police Department by reporting any suspicious activity immediately at (707)527-1000.
