INMATE ESCAPES AND RETURNS TO COUNTY JAIL
On August 2, 2014 at about 2:23PM, inmate Jesse Eagle Wilmes escaped from the North County Detention Facility. The Correctional Deputy monitoring the security system saw an inmate run through a gate as it was securing. Within NCDF, Correctional Deputies heard the alarm and went to investigate. Their search revealed that Wilmes was unaccounted for and was indeed the escaped inmate.
Patrol Deputies and a K9 unit responded to the area but did not find Wilmes. Detectives responded to various locations throughout the county in hopes of capturing him. It was presently unknown if Wilmes had any assistance in his escape or whether it was a solo, spontaneous act.
Wilmes came into custody on March 5, 2014, for felony grand theft of a motor vehicle, receiving known stolen property, possession of narcotics and violation of probation. He was convicted of 666.5PC – felony grand theft of a motor vehicle with priors and sentenced on March 21st. He was serving a sentence of 5 years months total aggregate county time, which was reduced to 20 months in jail.
The housing of prison inmates in county detention facilities is the State’s effort to reducing the prison population by housing CDCR inmates who are deemed to be non-violent, non-serious and non-sexual offenders in local jails. These inmates are considered low risk and require less security than those incarcerated in State Prisons.
Wilmes returned to the Main Adult Detention Facility and surrendered himself at about 4:00PM on August 3, 2014. He is now in custody for his original violations and 4532 PC – Escape from a Correctional Facility. He is being held without bail. His next court date is August 5, 2014 at 1:30PM.
