Moorpark Police Department Launch "Operation Life Saver" Railroad Crossing Safety Enforcement #sheriffvc

Nature of Incident: Railroad Crossing Enforcement, “Operation Life Saver”
Location: City of Moorpark
Date & Time: Month of August 2014

Unit(s) Responsible: Moorpark Police Department Traffic Bureau

Narrative:
The Moorpark Police Department along with the California Highway Patrol will be conducting directed enforcement of laws related to pedestrian and vehicular traffic interfacing at railroad crossings in the City of Moorpark during the month of August.

The enhanced enforcement is known as “Operation Life Saver.” The enforcement campaign is a program created and supported by officials with the Union Pacific Railroad and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Metro Link Unit. “Operation Life Saver” is designed to remind the public about the dangers involved when encountering the numerous and very busy train crossings in the City of Moorpark and surrounding areas.

Enforcement will be directed at pedestrians and drivers who violate various laws related to railroad crossings, such as those who stop their vehicles on the railroad tracks, or those who disobey the crossing arms meant to stop traffic as a train approaches. There will also be heightened enforcement of trespassing on railroad property which includes crossing at locations not designated for crossing by pedestrians. Heightened enforcement will be conducted at various crossings in the City of Moorpark.

Railroad crossing violations often lead to accidents which involve serious injury and/or death. During the month of August, the Moorpark Police Department will be specifically taking a zero tolerance during the enforcement and will be issuing citations and making arrests for all railroad related violations.
