Arcadia Police warn of IRS Scam.

The Arcadia Police Department would like to remind our community about a fairly common scam known as the IRS Scam.  There are several variations of how the scam works but basically a person calls claiming to be an IRS Agent.  The caller tells you that you owe a sum of money for back taxes or fines, and then demands payment over the telephone.  If you don’t answer the phone they will leave a message and request that you call back.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is aware of the scam and released a statement indicating that they will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail.  They also indicate that they never ask for credit/debit/prepaid card information or pin numbers to access such accounts over the telephone.   For more information on this scam you can go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.

Several other governmental agencies have experienced similar scams.  We recommend that if you question whether or not the request is legitimate, do not give out account or personal information.  Ask the caller for their contact information and follow up with the agency to verify.
